Hung Shen-han defends APEC participation in Nanjing

Taiwanese Labor Minister Hung Shen-han has addressed his recent attendance at the APEC Human Resources Development Ministers' Meeting in Nanjing, China. Hung stated that he traveled using an APEC invitation rather than a Chinese travel permit, allowing him to use dedicated channels and ensuring he received the same rights and treatment as other member economies. He emphasized that Taiwan’s participation under the name ‘Chinese Taipei’ maintains ‘equal dignity and participation’ within the multilateral organization.

Critics, including political commentator Tung Chung-yen, have questioned Hung’s conduct during the trip. Tung accused the Minister of failing to express his previously held political stances while in China, suggesting a double standard by the Democratic Progressive Party compared to past administrations.

Separately, Minister Hung noted that a review committee will meet to discuss the 2025 minimum wage. Given recent feedback from employers and labor groups, there is a high probability that the monthly minimum wage will exceed NT$30,000 and the hourly rate will surpass NT$200.
