Hung Shui Kiu Station to use world-first station shifting construction method
MTR Corporation has announced a world-first construction method for the upcoming Hung Shui Kiu Station on the Tuen Ma Line. To minimize disruption to existing rail services, the project will utilize a ‘build first, shift later’ approach.
Instead of traditional on-site construction, the two sides of the station structure will be pre-assembled 30 meters away from the elevated viaduct. Each platform component, manufactured in mainland China, measures 210 meters long, 15 meters wide, and weighs approximately 10,000 tons. These structures will then be precisely moved into position using a hydraulic system.
The shifting process is expected to occur in stages during 2027. The first phase, moving the structure toward Wu Kai Sha, is scheduled for the end of the first quarter, while the second phase, moving toward Tuen Mun, is planned for the third quarter.
Because the final connection involves moving the structures within the last two meters to integrate with the existing viaduct and electrical systems, MTR expects brief service adjustments. These adjustments are anticipated to affect Tuen Mun, Siu Hong, and Tin Shui Wai stations for no more than two days per side. MTR is currently discussing the specific details of these service disruptions with the government.
