Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital removes 3.5 kg spleen from patient

Doctors at Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital in Vietnam have successfully performed surgery to remove a giant spleen weighing 3.5 kg from a 69-year-old woman. The patient, residing in Phu Tuc, Gia Lai, had experienced an enlarged spleen for over three years, which led to chronic anemia and significant abdominal swelling.

The organ measured approximately 30 × 9 × 22 cm, extending from below the diaphragm to the level of the iliac crest. This massive size occupied a substantial portion of the abdominal cavity and caused compression of surrounding organs.

Medical professionals noted that the surgery was particularly challenging due to the restricted operational space and the high risk of bleeding, which required precise vascular control. Following the successful removal of the spleen, the patient's health has stabilized, and she remains under post-operative care.
