Hungarian authorities launch investigations into budget fraud and ventilator business scams
The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has launched an investigation into the second phase of the Southern Railway Ring project due to suspicions of significant budget fraud. The investigation follows a report from the Ministry of Transport and Construction regarding potential illegal collusion during the procurement process. The project, which aims to increase rail capacity between Ferencváros and Kelenföld, faces the potential withdrawal of 360 billion forints in EU funding after the European Commission raised concerns over the bidding process.
In a separate matter, NAV is investigating suspected budget fraud and money laundering related to ventilator procurement businesses. Bálint Májer, an alleged leader of the operation, sent a message from abroad stating his intention to return to Hungary to participate in the proceedings after discovering he was wanted under an international arrest warrant. Two individuals were arrested by authorities following a motion from the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Prosecutor's Office.
