Hungarian Authority Finds Deficiencies in Half of Tested Detergents

The National Authority for Consumer Protection and Trade (NKFH) has released the results of a comparative laboratory study on liquid detergents and washing powders. The investigation examined active ingredient content, the accuracy of label information, and packaging integrity.

According to the NKFH, approximately half of the tested products exhibited deficiencies. Common issues included inaccurate dosage instructions, discrepancies between labeled data and measured values, and composition errors. In some instances, mass-based and volume-based dosage recommendations were inconsistent, and two products were found to be leaking powder before the packaging was even opened.

The study also identified products with extremely high salt content. One specific washing powder was found to contain 94 percent table salt, while its active ingredient content was below 1 percent. While current EU and Hungarian regulations do not set upper limits for salt content or minimum requirements for active ingredients, the NKFH has initiated proceedings against certain products due to questionable claims regarding high efficiency and incorrect dosage labeling.

Regarding efficacy, the NKFH noted that liquid detergents generally contain a higher concentration of surfactants, which are essential for removing greasy stains. Some washing powders also contained oxygen-based bleaching agents for stain removal. However, the authority stated that the measurement results alone are insufficient to determine whether liquid or powder detergents are more effective overall.
