Hungarian automotive market shows hybrid vehicles lead in value retention

Recent data from Használtautó.hu and the Hungarian Central Statistical Office reveals that hybrid vehicles are the most value-retaining cars on the Hungarian market, losing an average of only 5.7 percent of their value annually. In comparison, gasoline cars lose 6.9 percent, diesel vehicles 7.5 percent, and fully electric vehicles 7.7 percent.

The Hungarian used car market has seen an increase in supply, growing by over 11,000 units compared to the previous year, driven largely by a surge in hybrid listings. While the volume of the market is still dominated by traditional internal combustion engines—gasoline and diesel models account for approximately 92 percent of listings—the availability of cheaper vehicles under 2.5 million HUF is declining, with the mid-range segment growing to fill the gap.

On a broader industrial scale, the Hungarian automotive sector is navigating a period of global transition. While electric vehicle adoption is high in Scandinavia and China, where renewable energy vehicles exceed 65 percent of new sales, Hungary remains in the middle ground with electric vehicles accounting for over 10 percent of new passenger car sales. The industry faces intense competition from Chinese manufacturers who are producing high-quality, cost-effective electric models for the European market.
