Hungarian Catholic Charity aids tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees over five years

For five years, the Hungarian Catholic Charity (Katolikus Karitász) has provided humanitarian assistance to both internal and cross‑border Ukrainian refugees. The organisation reports helping more than 50,000 people in Hungary and tens of thousands within Ukraine, delivering food, clothing, cleaning supplies and generators. In September 2023 a Russian drone strike destroyed a warehouse, burning roughly 300 tonnes of aid. Despite the loss, the charity continued its operations, dispatching its 693rd shipment to Ukraine and supplying 33 generators and 10 million forints in February 2026 to address power shortages. A nationwide fundraising drive raised about 133 million forints, which funded clothing and meals for 1,170 people, including 350 children, as well as mental‑health support for returning soldiers. The charity now emphasises integration programmes, language courses and bureaucratic assistance for newcomers.
