Hungarian Constitutional Court upholds key Fundamental Law amendments
The Hungarian Constitutional Court has rejected all motions submitted by the Fidesz and KDNP parties regarding the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law. The court's decision maintains several key changes, including the termination of President Tamás Sulyok's mandate, a 12-year or three-term limit for parliamentary representatives, and a 70-year age limit for judges and constitutional judges.
In its ruling, the Court stated it lacks the jurisdiction to review the substantive content of Fundamental Law amendments, noting it can only examine whether the procedural requirements for adoption and proclamation were met. This limitation was established by a previous amendment passed by Fidesz.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar welcomed the decision, stating that it confirms the constitutionality of the changes. Conversely, the Fidesz parliamentary group criticized the ruling, describing the Court as “decapitated and intimidated” and claiming the decision paves the way toward “tyranny.”
