Hungarian construction production rises 21.9 percent in August
Hungarian construction production saw a significant increase of 21.9 percent in August compared to the previous year, according to data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH). This follows three consecutive months of decline. The growth was primarily driven by a 102.4 percent surge in the construction of other structures, including road, railway, and utility works, while the construction of buildings actually decreased by 9.6 percent.
Analysts suggest this spike may be due to unique, non-sustained factors rather than a long-term recovery. Specifically, experts from Granit Asset Management and MBH Bank point to a low base effect and specific large-scale projects, such as the construction of the Paks bottom threshold, as primary drivers.
Despite the August increase, the outlook remains cautious. The volume of new contracts signed in August fell by 55.2 percent compared to the previous year. Additionally, the total volume of existing construction contracts decreased by 11.4 percent. Analysts warn that while EU funds may provide long-term support, short-term performance could be hindered by uncertainties within large companies and the suspension of certain state-funded major investments.
