Hungarian consumer authority investigates retirement home contracts

The National Authority for Trade and Consumer Protection (NKFH), in cooperation with government offices, has launched a nationwide investigation into the general terms and conditions used by retirement home operators. The probe aims to identify whether contracts contain unfair or unjustifiably disadvantageous clauses for consumers.

Recognizing that moving to a retirement home is a significant, long-term financial decision for the elderly, the NKFH is examining several key areas. Investigators will check if operators maintain the right to unilaterally modify service fees, if they attempt to limit their own liability, or if they restrict a consumer's ability to terminate a contract.

Additionally, the authority is looking for clauses that impose unreasonably short notice periods for moving out or those that limit a consumer's right to seek legal recourse through courts or other judicial means.
