Hungarian consumer watchdog finds 80% of USB chargers fail safety tests

Hungary’s National Consumer and Trade Protection Authority (NKFH) examined 200 USB chargers in two testing phases in 2026. In the first phase, 92 chargers were lab‑tested and 74 did not meet safety standards, meaning 80.4 % of the products failed. The agency noted similar failure rates in recent years – 85 % in 2023, 92 % in 2024 and 87 % in 2025.

Samples were taken from technical stores, specialist retailers, small Eastern‑Asian‑operated shops and online platforms. NKFH warned consumers to buy chargers from reputable sellers, avoid unusually cheap or unknown‑origin items, and discontinue use immediately if a charger overheats or behaves abnormally.
