Hungarian Defence Forces restore historical unit names

As of September 1, thirteen units within the Hungarian Defence Forces have officially reclaimed their historical names and organizational numbers. This change follows an assessment by the Ministry of Defence to determine if military personnel preferred maintaining current designations or returning to traditions established prior to the regime change.

According to Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, the decision was driven by the actual needs of the soldiers, with over 90 percent of the personnel participating in the consultation. The Minister emphasized that the move is intended to bolster community identity and honor military traditions rather than being merely symbolic.

In addition to the renaming of units—which include the 1st Honvéd Combat Engineer and Naval Regiment and the 102nd Artúr Görgei Chemical Defense Regiment, among others—the Minister announced that government discussions are ongoing regarding further improvements. A key priority remains the implementation of a roadmap to adjust salaries for those in service.
