Hungarian diplomacy faces scrutiny over political appointments

Reports indicate a growing trend of political appointees, often relatives or acquaintances of government officials, securing significant diplomatic positions in Hungary despite a lack of professional expertise. This phenomenon has contributed to a decline in the international prestige of Hungarian diplomacy.

Specific cases include Ádám István Pulay, a lawyer and former political organizer who served as an economic attaché in Ghana without relevant economic training. Pulay is reportedly the brother-in-law of Fidesz politician Balázs Hidvéghi. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that Pulay’s foreign service will be terminated by late August 2026. Another instance involves Kristóf Kőrösi, who was appointed as a deputy ambassador in Nigeria at age 26 without practical experience.

The scrutiny follows a period of diplomatic tension, including boycotts by EU member states during Hungary’s EU Presidency and instances where foreign diplomatic corps, such as Poland’s, have excluded the Hungarian ambassador from official events.
