Hungarian Drama Day honors Imre Madách and literary heritage
September 21 marks Hungarian Drama Day, a celebration established in 1984 to commemorate the 1883 premiere of Imre Madách’s monumental work, ‘Az ember tragédiája’ (The Tragedy of Man). The original production took place at the National Theatre under the direction of Ede Paulay.
The day serves to highlight the value of Hungarian dramatic literature both within Hungary and among Hungarian communities abroad. It aims to inspire new creators and draw attention to the enduring relevance of classical and contemporary works. In Romania, the celebration is also observed, with events such as the dráMA contemporary theatre meeting held in Odorheiu Secuiesc.
