Hungarian Education Minister Lannert Judit Announces Safe School Start and Exam Reforms

Education Minister Lannert Judit said a "safe start to the school year" is a priority, emphasizing gradual reforms rather than a complete overhaul. She announced the dissolution of current school‑district leadership appointments and a new open competition for district heads, to be selected by the end of October for five‑year terms. The Klebelsberg Centre will continue to operate as a support institution for education development, and the minister stressed that professional qualifications will guide future appointments, aiming to remove political influence from district management.

In parallel, Lannert Judit confirmed that consultations have begun to redesign the Hungarian language and literature matura. A newly formed committee is drafting proposals to simplify and clarify the exam, reduce middle‑level requirements, and grant teachers greater professional freedom. The process involves the Hungarian Teachers’ Association and the History Teachers’ Association, with a broad professional consultation slated for late summer and an interim regulatory version expected by autumn as part of a wider overhaul of the National Curriculum.
