Hungarian Energy Minister Kapitány István urges power saving amid heatwave

Hungarian Minister of Economy and Energy Kapitány István warned that during the current heatwave citizens should reduce air‑conditioner use between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., shift laptop, mobile‑phone and electric‑car charging to later hours and run large household appliances after 9 p.m. He said “with a little attention we can also help this work” and that these simple choices ease stress on the grid and lower electricity bills.

He also announced that the Danube’s high water temperature triggered a legally required power‑output reduction at the Paksi Nuclear Power Plant. The reduction of four reactor blocks is routine, regulated and will not be felt by consumers. Kapitány assured that Hungary’s electricity supply remains safe and continuous while the heatwave impacts the whole of Europe, calling for collective responsibility in energy use.
