Hungarian financial assets and real estate markets show shifting trends

Hungarian households are significantly shifting their savings structures. Direct stock assets have quadrupled over the last six years, approaching 4 trillion HUF, while the total gross financial wealth of households has climbed from 63 trillion HUF in 2019 to over 124 trillion HUF by early 2026. This growth indicates a rising openness to long-term equity investments, although the stock portion of financial wealth (over 3%) still trails the European Union average of approximately 5%.

In the real estate sector, market trends are diversifying. While annual price increases have slowed in Budapest and nationwide, regional differences are stark. New property prices in Zala county have decreased by 1% year-on-year, whereas Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county has experienced price hikes exceeding 30%. In Budapest, the average advertising price per square meter reached 1.49 million HUF in July.

Furthermore, the asset management landscape is evolving due to tightening government regulations on trust asset management. Financial experts note that while total wealth in Hungary is increasing, the number of high-net-worth individuals remains estimated between 40,000 and 60,000.
