Hungarian football faces player disputes and refereeing controversies

Tensions are rising in Hungarian football following a series of disputes involving players and officiating. Former Videoton FC Fehérvár player Gergő Kocsis issued an open letter in response to comments made by head coach Tamás Pető. Pető had previously referred to Kocsis as a ‘hamburger kid’ and described certain actions as ‘pathetic wriggling’ during an interview regarding coaching changes. Kocsis clarified that he was not dismissed from the club but simply chose not to extend his contract.

Separately, a controversial match between DVSC and Nyíregyháza has sparked criticism of Hungarian refereeing. During the game, referee Márton Rúsz failed to issue a red card following an elbow strike by Bence Batik on Attila Temesvári. The decision led to Batik receiving a second yellow card later in the match, resulting in a dismissal. Nyíregyháza manager Tamás Bódog criticized the referee’s perceived arrogance, while former officials and former national team captain János Csank noted that the VAR failed to intervene in a situation that warranted a straight red card.
