Sándor Csányi, a FIFA Vice President and President of the Hungarian Football Federation, has officially withdrawn his support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino. In a letter to Infantino, Csányi stated he has “lost the trust” in the president’s leadership, citing decisions that serve political interests rather than the interests of football.

The crisis was precipitated by the dismissal of FIFA Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour on August 17. Lamour had been a vocal critic of the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, which sought to create a separate commercial entity to manage lucrative rights, such as the men’s World Cup, and sell approximately 20% of the company to private investors. Although Infantino eventually withdrew the FFE plan following intense opposition from organizations like UEFA, Csányi noted that Lamour’s dismissal over his opposition to the plan raised serious concerns regarding Infantino’s professional judgment and ethical standards.

Beyond Csányi, other football entities have expressed dissatisfaction. The Israeli Football Association has called for Infantino’s resignation, citing an “unprecedented crisis of confidence.” While some continental confederations remain divided, the internal pressure on Infantino increases as he prepares to run for a new mandate in March 2027.
