Hungarian former ministers detained in corruption probe

A Hungarian court has extended the detention of former Cultural and Innovation Minister Balázs Hankó and former State Secretary Veronika Varga-Bajusz until February 1, 2027. The decision by the Kecskemét District Court follows a motion by the Bács-Kiskun County Chief Prosecutor's Office regarding suspicions of breach of trust causing significant financial damage.

Prosecutors allege that the suspects misused funds from the National Cultural Fund (NKA) through the Temporary College of Highlighted Cultural Programs. It is claimed that funds were distributed in violation of laws and founding decisions, bypassing legitimate decision-making processes. Authorities suggest that some grants were approved without merit to cover campaign costs for the 2026 parliamentary elections or for the personal use of applicants. The suspected financial damage may exceed 17.3 billion forints.

The court justified the extension of detention by citing the risk of flight, the potential for obstructing evidence, and the danger of influencing the proceedings. The Fidesz party has criticized the decision, labeling it a “clearly political decision” and claiming the judiciary has come under government control.
