Hungarian Government Allocates 5.5 bn Forint to Keep Three Regional Airports Operating

The Hungarian cabinet announced an extra 5.5 billion forint to fund the operation of three regional airports—Debrecen, Sármellék and Pécs‑Pogány. The support is intended to prevent the airport operators from becoming insolvent and includes a comprehensive audit to identify a sustainable business model.

All three airports currently handle low passenger volumes and have struggled to maintain regular scheduled services. Recent attempts, such as the short‑lived Pécs‑Munich route, were halted due to financial difficulties. The funding will also be distributed to the companies that run the airports, including the Nemzeti Regionális Repülőtér Üzemeltető Holding Kft., and is projected to safeguard around 250 jobs that would otherwise be lost.
