Hungarian Government Reshapes Cultural Institutions Under Orbán

During Viktor Orbán’s tenure, dozens of research institutes, cultural enterprises, committees, agencies and foundations were created to support the regime’s ideological base. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences and its research network were fragmented, while new bodies such as the Magyar Kultúra Foundation, the Schmidt Mária holding, the Central European Built Heritage Preservation Foundation and the Petőfi Cultural Agency received state funding and now operate under the direct control of the culture minister.

The government also re‑asserted founder rights over previously semi‑autonomous public‑interest foundations, effectively deciding which institutions will be retained and which will be dismantled. The National Strategic Research Institute (NSKI), established in 2012 and overseen by minister‑level officials, continues to manage a budget of roughly 1–1.4 billion forints, outsourcing many projects to private firms.

In a related interview, cultural commentator Schmidt Mária criticised dictatorial systems, warned that the lack of free speech and internet access contributed to Fidesz’s electoral setbacks, and argued that the regime’s massive spending on online control failed to secure lasting support.
