Hungary to terminate 23 trillion forint highway concession
The Hungarian government has announced plans to terminate a 23 trillion forint highway concession agreement currently held by MKIF Zrt., a company with interests involving businessmen Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szíjj. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the government intends to initiate criminal proceedings following the termination.
Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy noted that state management could reduce highway operation and maintenance costs by 53 percent, while major maintenance tasks could be performed 61 percent more cheaply compared to the current concession model.
Separately, significant infrastructure and transport updates are occurring in Hungary. The Budapest-Belgrade railway line is entering a final track regulation phase, with domestic passenger service expected to begin in late October and international service potentially starting in December. Additionally, the Déli Railway Station in Budapest will undergo a complete closure this weekend for critical maintenance, including track and switch replacements, to address infrastructure issues and prepare for high-capacity motor trains.
