Hungarian Government's Planned Brussels Luxury Restaurant Deal Falls Through

The Orbán administration set aside 7.2 billion forints to acquire a property in Brussels' most expensive district, next to the Parc de Bruxelles and the Hungarian House used for the 2024 EU Council presidency. The purchase was intended to host a fine‑dining restaurant showcasing Hungarian cuisine and to provide diplomatic and protocol spaces.

The transaction was never completed. The parties did not sign the sale contract, with officials citing the inability to obtain a permit for commercial‑purpose use and technical renovation plans that did not meet requirements. The failure was not linked to the change of government after the election, according to the Hungarian National Asset Management Company.

The aborted deal highlights the challenges of using public funds for overseas property projects and diplomatic hospitality initiatives.
