A Hungarian JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet crashed near the Szolnok air base during a training mission. The aircraft, which was carrying live ammunition and fuel, experienced a critical failure of its onboard electronics and flight instruments. Following the malfunction, the pilot attempted an emergency landing at the Szolnok base but was forced to eject after the aircraft lost control and veered off the runway, where it caught fire.

The 51-year-old pilot, an experienced officer with nearly 2,000 flight hours, sustained a spinal injury during the ejection. He was transported by helicopter to the Honvéd Hospital in Budapest, where he underwent successful surgery. Medical professionals expect a full recovery.

Defense Minister Romulus Rusin-Szendy and Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed that the crash occurred within a secure military area, preventing damage to civilian infrastructure or casualties on the ground. An official investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched, with experts from the manufacturer, Saab, expected to assist. As a precaution, training flights for the Gripen fleet in Hungary have been suspended until the investigation is complete.
