Panyi Szabolcs Receives World Press Freedom Hero Award in Bogotá
Investigative journalist Panyi Szabolcs was presented with the 2026 World Press Freedom Hero award by the International Press Institute (IPI) and International Media Support (IMS) at the Fundación Gabo’s Gabo Festival in Bogotá, Colombia. The honor recognized the work of Hungary’s independent journalists and newsrooms in defending press freedom and democracy against growing political pressure. Szabolcs explained that Hungarian media have been forced to create their own independent outlets and rely on reader subscriptions and donations after the government redirected advertising revenue and attempted to acquire and politicise former independent outlets. The award highlights the resilience of these journalists and their supporters in an increasingly hostile environment.
