Hungarian land‑registry official arrested for bribery and data tampering

Hungarian authorities detained a senior land‑registry employee suspected of abusing his position for more than seven years. Prosecutors allege the official altered the public land‑registry database without proper documentation, inserting false entries and deleting legitimate ones in roughly fifty cases between 2019 and 2026, in exchange for cash. The misconduct created discrepancies between property titles and the registry’s map data. Two real‑estate agents were also questioned as accomplices – one allegedly paid the official over a personal property dispute, the other facilitated illicit changes for a third party.

The Szegedi Regional Prosecutor’s Office conducted raids on June 23, seizing electronic devices, documents and cash. The official faces 48 counts of commercial‑type official bribery and 54 counts of public‑document falsification. A court ordered his pre‑trial detention for one month to prevent evidence tampering, while the two agents remain free pending trial. The detained official has filed an appeal against the detention order.
