Hungarian lawyers weigh in on Viktor Orbán’s political remarks

Legal experts are commenting on recent statements by Viktor Orbán regarding criminal proceedings against former government figures. Orbán has characterized these investigations as political attempts to dismantle the Fidesz-KDNP party, suggesting that the current administration is targeting him and his allies.

Lawyer György Magyar noted that while Orbán expressed solidarity with those detained, such political labels do not replace judicial decisions. He emphasized that the innocence or guilt of individuals must be determined by the results of legal proceedings and highlighted the need for the prosecution service to regain public trust through impartial leadership.

Attorney Gergely Bárándy described Orbán’s rhetoric as distasteful and politically provocative, noting that while the comments push boundaries, they do not meet the legal criteria for crimes such as armed rebellion or the violent alteration of the constitutional order. Bárándy observed that such statements are frequent but cautioned against crossing legal lines.
