Hungarian media faces allegations of political influence and structural shifts
Allegations have surfaced regarding the editorial independence of the Hungarian public news program M1 Híradó. A recent post claims that editorial decisions during the tenure of its editor-in-chief between December 2024 and May 2025 were influenced by political and media market interests, suggesting the news service acted as a mouthpiece for the government. However, the specific documents or instructions supporting these claims were not provided.
Simultaneously, the Hungarian media landscape is undergoing structural shifts. Following changes in control over the MTVA, journalists and outlets previously aligned with national-conservative values are facing institutional realignment. The publication Mandiner is reportedly facing dissolution after its new leadership, appointed by the Ministry of Finance, announced its closure. In response, several journalists, including Dániel Kacsoh, Krisztián Lentulai, and Mátyás Kohán, have resigned to pursue new, independent initiatives such as the ‘Konfront’ project, as the media environment shifts from large editorial offices toward thematic workshops and digital platforms.
