Hungarian Medical Chamber to launch national physician database

The Hungarian Medical Chamber (MOK) has launched a national initiative to create a unified database of physicians in Hungary. The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2027, aims to consolidate information currently scattered across approximately 13 to 14 different state registries.

According to MOK President Péter Álmos, the new system will provide an accurate count of active doctors, their specific locations of practice (including both private and public sectors), and their medical specializations. This initiative follows government decisions regarding the reinstatement of mandatory chamber membership. During the last period of mandatory membership in 2023, 50,000 doctors were registered with the body.

In addition to the database, the Chamber is focusing on restoring its role in ethical proceedings, a responsibility previously held by the Ministry of Interior. Éva Kereszty, chair of the MOK Ethics Committee, stated that a primary task will be developing a new, 21st-century ethical code. This code is intended to provide guidance for special circumstances, such as triage protocols during resource shortages, rather than acting solely as a punitive tool.
