Hungarian military prepares for new threats with technology focus

Hungarian Chief of Staff Zsolt Sándor and NATO Commander Pierre Vandier held a press conference in Budapest to discuss adapting military forces to modern conflicts. The discussions focused on integrating new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, drones, and autonomous systems, into the Hungarian Defense Forces.

Sándor emphasized the need for rapid adaptation, stating that an ‘80 percent solution today is still better than a 100 percent solution five years from now.’ He noted that while foreign successful systems should be observed, they must be tailored to the specific characteristics of Hungarian forces. Strengthening cooperation between universities, the defense industry, and the military is seen as essential for this transition.

Vandier highlighted that Hungary possesses a unique force transformation plan among NATO members, citing the acquisition of Leopard 2A7 tanks as an example of modernization. He noted that while traditional weapon systems remain necessary, they must be used in conjunction with digital technologies to increase combat effectiveness and soldier protection while reducing costs.
