Orbán Viktor’s arrest sought in Hungary’s gold‑convoy case

A leaked internal prosecutor’s document lists former prime minister Orbán Viktor among officials whose criminal responsibility should be examined in the “gold‑convoy” investigation, which centres on a March seizure of a Ukrainian money‑carriers convoy that held roughly 27 billion forints of gold and cash. Ukrainian money‑carriers’ lawyer Horváth Lóránt filed a petition asking for the pre‑trial detention and possible imprisonment of Orbán Viktor, former Counter‑Terrorism Centre chief Hajdú János, former state secretary for security services Farkas Örs and former NAV deputy head Deméter Tamás. Prime Minister Péter Magyar publicly urged the Chief Prosecutor to remove alleged “Hungarian Cosa Nostra” figures from the prosecution service and, if unable, to resign, while demanding answers on whether the named individuals have been questioned as suspects. The Chief Prosecutor responded that the prosecutor’s office is independent, that two separate investigations are underway – one into money‑laundering based on a Constitution Protection Office report and another into possible procedural violations during the convoy seizure – and warned that speculation or “guess‑work” could hinder evidence collection. The prosecutor’s office said substantive results are expected soon and will be communicated publicly.
