Hungarian Minister Zoltán Tarr Wins Court Ruling Over Dismissal

Hungary’s minister for culture and social relations, Zoltán Tarr, secured a legal victory after the Budapest Court of Appeal upheld a lower‑court decision that his termination from the nonprofit Neumann Nonprofit Kft was unlawful. The dismissal followed Tarr’s public remarks at a Kossuth Square protest on 6 April 2024, where he denounced the blending of state and church.

The court ordered the employer to pay Tarr one million forints in damages, which he pledged to donate to the Firefighter Association (Tűzcsiholó Egyesület), an organisation that assists families formerly under state care. Tarr framed the case as emblematic of broader attempts to penalise citizens for exercising conscience‑based speech, warning that such political interference threatens freedom of opinion across the country.
