Hungarian ministerial wealth declarations lead to new false‑statement penalties

Hungary has published the first asset declarations of its cabinet members, revealing vast disparities in personal wealth. The most affluent minister, Kapitány István, reported investments exceeding six billion forints, alongside a Maserati GranTurismo and a Tesla Model 3. The disclosures also show a Shell global vice‑president earning a monthly gross salary of 49 million forints.

Justice Minister Miklós Tisza announced that the new regulations will make false statements in wealth declarations punishable by up to two years in prison, aiming to curb previously “hand‑written fictional” filings. Prime Minister Péter Magyar entered office with 88 million forints in savings and four owned properties, while other ministers such as Zsolt Hegedűs and Anita Orbán were noted among the wealthier officials.

The move is intended to increase transparency and enforce accountability among public officials.
