Hungarian Ministry launches media funding for diaspora press

The Hungarian Ministry for Social Relations and Culture has launched a new grant program to support Hungarian-language electronic media operating outside of Hungary's borders. The initiative provides a total of 200 million forints in non-refundable funding, with individual applicants able to request between 4 and 30 million forints without a mandatory co-payment.

According to Minister Zoltán Tarr, this represents a shift toward a more transparent and predictable funding system for the Hungarian diaspora, moving away from previous practices based on individual decisions. The funds are intended to support editorial operations and the creation of new content focusing on minority rights, local economic processes, heritage protection, and the lives of Hungarian communities in the Carpathian Basin.

Eligible applicants include organizations and legal entities based in Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and Zakarpattia. This media initiative is being introduced alongside the continuation of the Határtalanul! program, which provides funding for student study trips to Hungarian-populated areas in the region to strengthen cultural ties.
