Hungarian mobile usage shows increased recycling and longer device lifespans

A study conducted by Yettel and Impetus Research reveals shifting trends in mobile phone usage and e-waste management among Hungarian consumers, with comparisons drawn to Serbia and Bulgaria.

In Hungary, the average consumer owns two mobile devices, with many keeping old phones as backups. However, the percentage of people keeping unused phones at home has dropped from 60% last year to 48%. Hungarian urban consumers tend to hold onto devices longer, with 33% using them until they malfunction, compared to only about 10% in Serbia. Additionally, only 22% of urban Hungarians replace their phones every two years, a significantly lower rate than the 44% observed in Serbia.

Regarding sustainability, there is growing openness toward e-waste recycling. Approximately 84% of respondents are aware of recycling services offered by mobile companies, and 22% have already handed in used devices. Consumers show increasing interest in refurbished devices, prioritizing data erasure, warranties, and cash incentives when trading in old hardware.
