Hungarian mother sentenced for hiding daughter from Italian father

A 43-year-old Hungarian woman has received a suspended prison sentence after hiding her daughter from the child's Italian father for over a decade. The Mezőtúr District Court sentenced the woman to two years in prison, suspended for four years, for the crime of endangering a minor.

Following a final court ruling that terminated her parental rights and granted custody to the father, the woman lived in hiding with the child from November 2014 until June 2025. During this period, the girl, now 15, was unable to attend kindergarten or school. She was primarily educated at home by her mother or through self-study using textbooks and the internet.

The court also barred the woman from any occupation involving the upbringing, supervision, care, or medical treatment of minors for two years. The defendant admitted to the charges and waived her right to a trial, making the verdict final.
