Hungarian MPs Lázár János and Szijjártó Péter see salaries slashed over absenteeism

In July 2026, Fidesz MP Lázár János received a gross salary of 322,800 HUF, but the parliamentary speaker Forsthoffer Ágnes applied a penalty that reduced his pay to the minimum wage after he missed more than 90 % of the voting sessions. The same rule cut former foreign minister Szijjártó Péter’s remuneration to a gross 256,554 HUF; he had resigned his mandate in mid‑July and taken a position with Chinese automaker BYD, attending no votes at all.

Forsthoffer’s stricter enforcement, introduced in June, stipulates that any MP absent from over a quarter of votes will have their honorarium reduced proportionally. Other members, such as Orbán Balázs, also saw their July pay reduced (to 848,000 HUF) for similar absenteeism. While Lázár still earns substantial income from land rentals and his role as curator‑president of the state‑run Jövő Nemzedék Földje Foundation, the salary cuts highlight the new disciplinary approach to parliamentary attendance in Hungary.
