OTP Bank reviews potential complete withdrawal from Russia
OTP Bank, Hungary’s largest financial institution, is conducting a strategic review of its operations in Russia, which includes the possibility of a complete withdrawal from the country. CEO Péter Csányi stated that the decision will be driven by long-term shareholder value and the bank’s strategic focus on the Baltic region. This shift follows OTP’s agreement to acquire the Baltic banking group Luminor, which would significantly expand its footprint in the euro area.
Despite the potential exit, OTP’s Russian operations have remained profitable, yielding approximately 202 billion HUF last year. However, the bank has already taken steps to scale back, reducing its Russian workforce by 25 percent and its branch network by 40 percent. In contrast, the bank has increased its presence in Ukraine by 35 percent as of 2025.
Separately, reports have detailed significant wealth transfers and business shifts involving figures connected to the Hungarian central bank. Cecília Rogán-Szendrei has sold her 80 percent stake in Top News Hungary Kft., a company that reportedly generated high profits despite low readership. Meanwhile, Ádám Matolcsy has reportedly acquired various assets, including real estate and businesses, through the Dubai-based firm Minelley FZCO.
