Nyíregyháza Spartacus defeats Újpest 2-1 in NB I season opener
The opening round of Hungary's OTP Bank Liga 2026/27 was played on 24 July 2026 at Nyíregyháza's Sóstói Stadion. Nyíregyháza Spartacus came from behind to beat Újpest FC 2‑1. Újpest took the lead early through a 14‑minute goal by Bodnár, but Nyíregyháza equalised in the 50th minute via Medved and secured the winner in the 86th minute when Kvasina struck from distance.
Újpest entered the season with several new signings. Forward Prince Manu Balladom (from Benab FC), defender Ujváry Ferenc and midfielder Gáspár Dávid (both from Budapest Honvéd) were added to the squad. Club sport director Dárdai Pál highlighted a Bundesliga‑level training programme, individual fitness monitoring with smart rings, and the ambition to finish in the top four and qualify for European competition. He also noted the club's focus on developing home‑grown talent.
The match attracted 6,235 spectators, with the referee Rúsz Márton overseeing a game that featured three goal scorers—Bodnár, Medved and Kvasina—and several yellow‑card cautions.
