Hungarian officials charged in large public fund misappropriation cases

The Bács‑Kiskun County Prosecutor's Office has brought charges against six individuals, including three board members of a state‑owned enterprise, the former managing director of the lending company and a former director of Magyar Nemzeti Vagyonkezelő Zrt., for the unlawful 2.5 billion‑forint loan to a Romanian firm. The loan, intended for a solar‑power project, was granted without any credit assessment or collateral and the project never materialised, causing a loss exceeding the loan amount.

In a separate investigation in Somogy County, former Fonyód mayor József Hidvégi was taken into custody on suspicion of particularly large‑scale misappropriation of public funds. Police say the probe concerns sham contracts with the city‑run development and services company, allegedly involving 150–300 million forints of municipal money. Two suspects were arrested earlier; two more were detained during the latest round of questioning. Both cases reflect a broader anti‑corruption effort targeting misuse of public resources in Hungary.
