Hungarian Olympic Committee public procurement State Audit Office sports apparel budget misuse

The State Audit Office (ÁSZ) has reported that the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) failed to comply with public procurement regulations. According to a 30-page report published on August 27, the MOB bypassed mandatory procurement procedures for sports and formal wear purchases valued at 308 million HUF.

The audit focused on 935.6 million HUF in funding received from the Ministry of Defence in 2023, which was intended to support the Hungarian Olympic team's participation in international events. While the funds were used for their designated purpose, the methods used to select suppliers violated procurement laws.

The Public Procurement Arbitration Board determined that the MOB, as a public law organization, acts as a classic contracting authority and should have conducted formal tenders. Instead, the MOB used open calls for proposals, such as the one used to select suppliers for the 400-member Hungarian team at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Heavy Tools provided the collection for the opening ceremony.

The MOB is currently contesting these findings and has filed a lawsuit against the Arbitration Board's decisions. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and the Budapest Metropolitan Court has not yet issued a ruling.
