Hungarian Opera House Director Szilveszter Ókovács Criticizes Interim President Forsthoffer over Anna‑Ball Patronage

Szilveszter Ókovács, the chief director of the Hungarian State Opera House, posted a sharply worded comment on social media condemning interim President Forsthoffer Ágnes for refusing the invitation to serve as chief patron of the historic Anna‑Ball. Ókovács described the refusal as “undignified and unusual,” arguing that the move harms the reputation of the event, which is one of Hungary’s oldest and most prestigious social gatherings.

He suggested the decision may have political motives, referencing past patronage controversies and accusing Forsthoffer of abandoning a responsibility that traditionally involves active participation. Forsthoffer, who previously served as the ball’s queen at age 18, has not responded to the criticism. The dispute highlights tensions between cultural institutions and political figures over the role of public personalities in upholding national traditions.
