Hungarian Parliament Opening Draws Protest Over Roma Youth Orchestra

At the opening session of the new Hungarian parliament, the Sükösdi Danubia Tamburázenekar, known as the 100 Tagú Cigányzenekar, performed several pieces, including the Roma anthem and the folk song “Tavaszi szél.” Most members of parliament applauded the performance.

The far‑right Mi Hazank faction left the chamber, accusing the band’s appearance of violating parliamentary rules and exploiting children. The band responded on social media, calling the criticism discriminatory and stressing that Roma and tambur music are part of Hungary’s cultural heritage.

Mi Hazank leader László Toroczkai posted on X that the party “most unequivocally rejects the false defamation” made in the band’s statement. He said the walk‑out was not about the children’s origin but about a last‑minute change to the agenda imposed by the Tisza Party, accusing that party of unlawfully altering the approved schedule.
