Hungarian parliament suspends teacher performance evaluation system

On Tuesday the Hungarian parliament held an extraordinary session and voted to suspend the teacher performance evaluation system (TER) that had been in place since the previous government. State secretary Kapronczai Balázs told reporters that teachers' salaries will not be reduced and that the allowances earned under the former system will remain intact. He said the suspension ends “unnecessary rivalry and bureaucracy” and that a new, professionally designed evaluation framework is being prepared with input from professional bodies, with details expected within weeks.

At the same time, opposition members criticised a draft constitutional amendment that would extend the length of parliamentary and presidential mandates. MP Apáti István described the proposal as “law‑making terrorism,” arguing that the 12‑year term limit for MPs should be removed only with broader consensus. The debate reflects broader tensions over the Tisza government’s reform agenda.
