Hungarian Parliament faces tension over Roma Holocaust commemoration

Controversy erupted in the Hungarian Parliament following a commemoration for the victims of the Roma Holocaust. During a session where István Gyöngyösi of the Tisza Party spoke about the historical persecution and genocide of Roma people, representatives from the Tisza, Fidesz, and KDNP parties stood for a one-minute silent tribute. However, members of the Mi Hazánk Mozgalom party remained seated.

László Toroczkai, the Mi Hazánk faction leader, defended the decision, stating that the party was not rejecting the memory of the victims but was protesting a perceived violation of parliamentary rules. He argued that a silent standing tribute should have been coordinated in advance and that the sudden request was against standing agreements.

The incident drew sharp criticism from other political figures. Prime Minister Péter Magyar described the refusal to stand as unacceptable, stating that the party had insulted the memory of thousands of compatriots. Actress Dóra Szinetár also criticized the party on social media, warning that such political behavior risks raising a generation that views people as disposable based on arbitrary criteria.

Following a house committee meeting to resolve the tension, a consensus was reached among party leaders to hold a unified, official presidential commemoration to ensure a respectful and coordinated tribute to the victims.
