Hungarian performing arts: eSzínház Festival and Szeged Contemporary Ballet announcements
The sixth eSzínház Festival is scheduled to take place from September 18 to 27. As Hungary’s only online theatre festival, the event will feature 18 selected productions ranging from classical works by Chekhov and Kosztolányi to contemporary Hungarian plays. Participating institutions include Katona József Theatre, Vígszínház, and the Vörösmarty Theatre, among others. A professional jury will evaluate the performances, and several special awards will be presented, including the Audience Award.
In other cultural news, the Szeged Contemporary Ballet will perform ‘Black Swan’ at the Margitsziget Open-Air Stage in Budapest on August 26. Directed by Tamás Juronics, this ballet-thriller reimagines Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ within a 19th-century psychiatric hospital. The production portrays the protagonist Odette as a patient struggling with schizophrenia, using hallucinations as an escape from reality.
