Hungarian Photography Day celebrates national photographic history

August 29 marks Hungarian Photography Day, a celebration of the nation's significant contributions to the evolution of photography from a technical recording tool to an independent artistic language.

The history of Hungarian photography is highlighted by several influential figures. Antal Vállas presented the first public daguerreotype in Hungary in 1840, depicting the Danube and Buda Castle. Since then, Hungarian photographers have achieved global impact. Key figures include André Kertész, a pioneer of modern photographic vision; Robert Capa, who redefined war photojournalism; Márton Munkácsi, known for his work in motion and reportage; and László Moholy-Nagy, who treated photography as a laboratory for modern art and technological experimentation. Other notable contributors include György Kepes, Lucien Hervé, and Éva Besnyő, whose works demonstrate the diverse directions the medium has taken.
