Hungarian PM Peter Magyar orders internal probes into gold convoy seizure

Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced on Facebook that immediate internal investigations have been ordered at the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV), the Counter‑Terrorism Centre (TEK) and other relevant agencies following the seizure of a Ukrainian money‑carrying convoy. The TEK commandos detained seven Ukrainian nationals and seized assets valued at more than 27 billion forints in gold and cash that were being transported from Austria to Kyiv. The Ukrainian officials later said the seized assets were returned to the Ukrainian bank that owned them, and President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Hungary for the "constructive" handling.

The incident prompted the chief prosecutor to be urged to comment, and led to the resignation of Central Prosecutor Pál Fürcht. The government’s response and the legal basis for the operation have been widely debated, with calls for further scrutiny of the handling of the case.
