Hungarian police bust online ATM fraud gang

Police in Fejér County arrested a 21‑year‑old man and his partner on 10 June 2026 after a months‑long investigation into a two‑person fraud network. The duo used counterfeit banking websites that mimicked legitimate online portals to capture victims’ login credentials. With the stolen IDs they accessed mobile‑banking services, withdrew cash from ATMs in Budapest and elsewhere 28 times, extracting more than 3.5 million forints, and used part of the money to buy expensive electronic devices and transfer funds to other accounts.

During the search of the suspects’ residence, officers also seized over 2.5 kg of plant material suspected to be a narcotic precursor, prompting a separate drug‑trade inquiry. The investigation highlighted the importance of verifying website URLs before entering banking details. The suspects remain in custody pending further legal proceedings.
